Library
St. Mary School library contains over 10,000 books in a wide variety of genres and literary styles.  Each grade/class has a weekly scheduled time in which they are provided guided help choosing books in their interest or appropriate reading level.  In addition, the students are exposed to various types of literature through a read-aloud and follow-up activity.  During library classes, students also learn and apply valuable skills such as alphabetizing, searching for information, and proper use and care of library materials.  Throughout the day, the library is also available for students to find/checkout books, look for information, and to take AR quizzes.  AR (Accelerated Reader) is a reading program in which students can take computerized quizzes based on books they have read.  The tests are designed to assess a student’s basic level of comprehension and vocabulary relating to a specific book. Teachers can monitor the students’ progress and target specific areas needed for additional instruction and growth. Students are awarded points for answering questions correctly.  Each trimester, the teachers and students work together to create an individualized AR goal.  All students who meet their goal for the trimester receive a special incentive reward.  The SMS Library also presents two Bookfairs each school year.  These are opportunities for students and families to have a “book store” atmosphere right at school.    A wide selection of books is provided for purchase, and the proceeds go toward needed items and supplies for the library and the classrooms.  Family Night, One for Books, visits from storybook characters, and contests are just some of the fun activities that occur during Bookfair week to promote a community of readers!
